How We Work Together

Typically, we’ll begin with a full psychological assessment during an hour-long consultation. I listen very carefully to understand your needs and concerns, significant events, and other important details about your life. Our first goal will be to come up with an assessment that you both understand and agree with. Based on that assessment, we will discuss treatment options to help you think through what makes the most sense to you. Medications are optional, but if appropriate I will provide information about medications I might suggest and the specific reason why we might use them.

Our next goal will be to work out what your treatment will look like. If you already take medication and question whether it is the right treatment for you, I’ll go over your current medicines, and in the context of our assessment, explain how each medication may or may not be helping you.

If you currently see a psychotherapist, I will want to give you a chance to talk about how it is going. Please note I have no stake whatsoever in attempting to change your mind about your experience. Rather, supporting you and any sources of help you receive is the stance I will always take.

With new patients starting a new medication, I typically schedule half-hour follow-up appointments every two weeks for the first two to three months. As you make progress, the interval between our visits will expand to every few months, depending on your needs.

If you are not receiving any psychotherapy but are interested in it or have questions about it, we can go into more detail about how I practice, the general principles I follow and beliefs I hold regarding the process of becoming healthier. If we decide to start working in more a “talk therapy” mode, we will discuss how to get started, how it “works” (length and frequency of visits as well as a brief explanation of the dynamics), what to expect, and answer any questions you might have.

(Please note: There is no reason to see this kind of treatment as mysterious or threatening! My goal is to determine with you the best way to go forward and to think flexibly how to go about taking those steps.)

I am committed to respecting your confidentiality and privacy, both as a professional standard and in compliance with HIPAA. I will not share details of your treatment without your signed consent, within the legal limitations of confidentiality.

My services are provided on a private-pay basis. I do not contract with third party insurance carriers. Payment is due on the day of your visit, via a variety of options, listed below. Please contact me for a fee schedule.
